Transition to Primary School
School Ready, Start Strong - Gidgee goes to school
Brewarrina Central School delivers the KinderSTART program where students attend school on Monday and Tuesday in term 4 to learn through play. Our future students become familiar with the school and staff through a range of fun filled activities. This program has a dedicated learning and playing space and teacher.
While attending the program, teachers and our Aboriginal educators are able to get to know students, their interests, areas of strength and any areas that we may need to support from day one in the new school year. The opportunity to get to know your child ensures that the school is prepared to meet each child's individual needs, ensuring they are socially, emotionally and cognitively prepared and ready for school.
Our KinderSTART students can join us for breakfast in the community hub, and will be provided with crunch and sip, recess and lunch.
Read the Getting ready for primary school guide for detailed tips and checklists.
Before your child starts Kindergarten
Enrolment interview
Before your child begins, all families meet with our principal. This is a time to share:
- medical conditions or allergies
- learning support needs
- family circumstances that may affect your child’s start
We want every child to feel safe, supported and included in school life.
Kindergarten orientation and information sessions
Our orientation sessions help children:
- meet teachers and classmates
- explore classrooms and playgrounds
- practise simple routines
Parents and carers join information sessions to learn about daily schedules, uniforms, lunches and communication. If you need an interpreter, let us know.
Transition to High School
Transition to High School
Brewarrina Central School supports students with Transition to high school with dedicated preparation days in secondary teaching spaces. Year 5 and 6 students participate in Clontarf and NASCA program with secondary girls and boys. This builds confidence of students formally commencing their high school education.
Students widen their exposure to a range of new courses and begin to seriously focus on their future beyond schooling. This is an important period in schooling where students must maintain their readiness to learn to maximise their choices of employment and further training and education beyond school.
Students cannot learn if they are not in class and prepared for learning. every lesson missed is a loss of learning achievement and future choices.
Pathways to the Future
Upper secondary students refine their focus to maximise their learning related to career pathways. Working on maintaining a focused mindset while developing skills that will make them successful in further training and learning, and competitive in job applications. Supported by a range of programs including a careers teacher, university and TAFE excursions, Careers expos and school based Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
